From increased market volatility to greater regulatory complexity, IR teams faced numerous challenges in 2023. Despite these hurdles, IR professionals emerged as strategic partners, playing a pivotal role in guiding companies through uncertain times. The capital markets were impacted by economic uncertainty with inflation and high interest rates. In addition, came the geopolitical tensions with the continued war in Ukraine and the Israel-Gaza conflict increasing the risk of disruptions in the Middle East and affecting supply of goods through the Gulf of Aden.
As we reflect on 2023, join us in exploring what lies ahead for IR this year. 2024 will undoubtedly be a year that presents many challenges in a highly uncertain global macroeconomic and geopolitical environment. In addition to the major themes that characterised 2023, many new themes will likely be added to the mix, not least due to the many upcoming elections around the world. However, in all of the uncertainty there may also be a silver lining in the form of new opportunities. New trends may emerge and lay the ground for key focus areas that could impact the IR-community in the short term such as;
- Artificial intelligence
- Integrated reporting
- Increased regulation
- New demands on corporate communication
- Public affairs
All well-known topics within the classic IR-spectra, but as they continue to develop and new trends are being formed, IR tools, annual wheels and ways of working may need to be updated to accommodate these changes. In particular, the speed of development and roll-out of artificial intelligence will be of huge influence in numerous ways just as the flow of new regulation will.
